Covid-19 Cases Spike In 2 School Districts; See District-By-District Incident Rates

Two local school districts experienced COVID-19 flare-ups over the last week, according to the most recent state data.

On Thursday, Jan. 28, the Massachusetts Department of Public Health and Department of Elementary and Secondary Education released how many COVID-19 incidents were reported by students and staff from Jan. 21-27.

Most of the Central and Western Massachusetts, as well as the Berkshires, had school districts where no COVID-19 incidents were reported that week.

However, Shrewsbury and Hampden-Wilbraham school districts each reported 12-15 students and faculty that had become ill with the virus.

The Hampden-Wilbraham district reported 10 students and 2 staff were ill.

In Shrewsbury, 10 students and 5 staff reported having COVID-19.

Shrewsbury has been enduring a spike in COVID-19 cases, according to daily reports by the city’s board of health. From Jan. 21-27, about 90 new COVID-19 cases were reported there.

Overall, in Massachusetts, from Jan. 21-27, 624 students and 345 staff reported COVID-19 incidents.

Other school districts that reported having any COVID-19 incidents included: 

  • Auburn, where 6 students and 1 staff said they were ill with the virus;
  • Clinton, 1 student, 4 staff;
  • Deerfield, 1 student, 1 staff;
  • East Longmeadow, 2 students;
  • Holyoke, 2 students, 2 staff;
  • Leicester, 5 students;
  • Ludlow, 2 staff;
  • Mount Greylock, 1 staff.
  • Pittsfield, 1 student;
  • Webster, 1 student, 1 staff;
  • West Springfield, 2 students, 1 staff;
  • Worcester, 5 staff.

Central, Western, and Berkshire school districts where no COVID-19 incidents were reported by students or staff include Agawam, Amherst-Pelham, Blackstone-Millville, Chicopee, Dudley-Charlton, Fitchburg, Gardner, Greenfield, Hampshire Regional, Lee, Leominster, Longmeadow, Lunenburg, Milford, Northampton, North Adams, Northbridge, Orange, Oxford, Palmer, Southern Berkshire, South Hadley, Springfield, Uxbridge, Westfield, and Whately.
